Eighty Minutes, One Rivalry: Who Will Reign Supreme on the Pitch?
By Jennifer Zavala
Let’s take you back to the field where this all happened. It was a compelling game with lots of tension and pressure. On October 12, 2026, Hamilton hosted Holland Christian. Hamilton came into the game with nerves and the pressure to beat their rivals, while Holland Christian came in thinking it was just another day, another easy game to win. Hamilton knew this game meant the final outcome of their thrilling season. This game was the game that determined which division they would go into for MSHAA Boys soccer districts. For the longest time, Holland Christian has been ascendant over Hamilton until this year. After a decade with the program, Head Coach Noah Chambers has seen the team’s dedication begin to pay off. “This team has been working very hard for a very long time, and our program is finally starting to reap the benefits,” he says. This victory represents more than just a win for the team; it is a defining moment for the entire community, reflecting years of dedication, perseverance, and anticipation as both athletes and supporters finally celebrate a long-awaited victory over their longtime rivals.
Although the rivalry between the two teams had been building for years, the real story unfolded on the field, where Hamilton proved they had what it took to win this game. From the opening whistle, both teams battled for control, trading possession in a fast-paced, hard-fought match With near misses and a flurry of yellow cards adding to the intensity, tensions continued to rise as the game progressed. The first-half whistle blew with a tied score of 0-0 in the first half. As the teams went to their corner for their team huddle, a chunk of drive and motivation hit the players to step up their game in the 2nd half, where things took a turn and changed out standing. With only a couple of minutes left of the 2nd half, the Hawkeyes saw their opening and their chance to take that win for themselves. Drake Keen saw the ball in the air heading right for him coming from the southeast side of the field; he took the initiative to get to that ball, and he headed it to Noah Hunderman, who played it to Eli Tubergan, who took that ball and got the Hamilton Hawkeyes the one and only score on the board, not knowing it would eventually lead us to winning the game.
Eighty minutes, one field, and countless moments that tested the team’s determination. When the final whistle sounded, the game became more than a score: it became another chapter in the team’s journey. As the boys continue to challenge themselves against strong competition, their progress reflects a program on the rise, with even greater opportunities ahead.
