My Experiences with Hamilton Track and Field
By: Jacob Chase
This is my 3rd season of Track and Field. I haven’t done track since freshman year, I’m a senior now doing track for fun. I enjoy competing with friends so I thought I might as well do track.
My freshman year of track I focused on long distance running which is the complete opposite of what I’m doing this season. I’m currently doing discus, 100 meter dash, and 200 meter dash. The workouts are completely different, not that the sprinting workouts are easy but they’re a lot easier than the distance workouts.
Discus is quite a unique event, it’s very hard to get the technique down good, let alone perfect. It’s my first year trying it and I’m slowly improving, getting my technique a little better each day. It’s easy to learn when I have teammates like Logan Eding, who critiques my form whenever he can to help me improve.
Discus is held in a ring that I was very unfamiliar with. I’m used to the ring on the wrestling mat. I’ve been wrestling for 13 years and it’s good to step away for a bit and have some fun with my friends before we all split up after graduation.
Our team is very welcoming and everyone knows everyone. I really enjoy being on the team with a group of people that I’ve grown up with.
Our team is very well rounded, across all the events. Everyone knows their place on the team and tries to do their best to score for the team. I think this is why our team is pretty successful, they know their job and they get it down the best they can.
I recently qualified for regionals in discus with a throw of 124’. I believe this is a great achievement for my first year doing the event. I think wrestling helped me understand how to get better at discus. This is because technique is always the most important thing and breaking down little details will get you to the next level.
