The history behind the cheer uniforms
By: trace lopez
For many cheer uniforms are a staple of the sport but few know the history behind the fashion trendy uniforms. The uniforms aren’t just uniforms, it is an achievement and a gift.
Korra Kapenga whose mom is a cheer coach and has done cheer her whole life said ¨it is more than just getting to wear the uniform it’s more you’ve earned the uniform”
Katie Lopez, a former cheerleader said ¨The uniforms have gone along with society’s fashion standards. The uniforms are based on fashion in the real world¨. The cheer uniforms are how they are to make the cheerleaders look preppy and prideful.

The 1982 uniforms were some of the first uniforms with the school mascot (Hawkeye) on them. The skirts were longer to match the fashion trends back then.
The 1990 uniforms instead of having the Hawkeye on it only had the H. They were mostly black with yellow stripes and a yellow H.

The 2006 uniforms were very flowy, and bright and had lots of team colors to make it look like they had school spirit.
The 2025 uniforms are shorter, white with a touch of all of our school’s colors to go along with the most recent fashion and trends like the shorter shorts.

Kaylee Vanderhide said” The uniforms are so significant because ¨ they show off their school spirit and their pridefulness¨. To be able to support our school in a cheer uniform is an amazing way to help our sports team compete and keep the audience engaged in the game or match.
Korra Kapenga said ¨once you are in a uniform you are a part of one whole family¨.
With many more uniform changes for cheer, they will evolve with the fashion trends. The uniforms will always have school pride and will help recognize everyone who keeps school preppy and sports teams motivated.
The uniforms are made to keep the cheerleaders dry, cool, and comfortable during routines which can give a big performance advantage. If you have good materials that can keep you dry it’ll keep you safer because it’ll be easier for a base to catch you and throw you with less slip. If you are cool and comfortable during a routine you’ll be more focused on the competition instead of the uniform.
That’s why the uniforms are significant and the history behind them.
