Many people who have not had a good coach say that coaches don’t benefit a team; they just set up drills or tell kids what they did wrong. But a coach is much more than that. A coach is a mentor in an athlete’s life, a person who guides them and teaches them all they know.

A coach plays a pivotal role in the development and success of athletes, serving not just as a trainer but also as a mentor, strategist, and motivator. Coaches possess a deep understanding of the sport, allowing them to plan training programs and strategies to help increase their team member’s physical and mental capabilities. Beyond the technical aspects, a good coach promotes a positive team environment, promoting values such as discipline, teamwork, and resilience.

Their ability to inspire and guide athletes through challenges can significantly impact their performance and overall growth, making the coach a key figure in the world of sports.

Nick Kronemyer has been the Hamilton varsity basketball coach for six years. He is a Hamilton basketball alumni and played collegiate basketball at Calvin. Coach Kronemyer has had two winning seasons and one district championship in his time at Hamilton.

Coach Kronemyer’s success cannot be measured by wins and losses, though. It can be measured by his impact off the court.

Senior Gavin Sabla said, “His guidance and support have not only helped us improve our skills on the court but also taught us valuable life lessons. He wants us to be better individuals, share our appreciation for the support we’ve been given, and translate that discipline and integrity to the real world while having positive energy to help better the people around us.”

Junior Donny Wanger adds to this by saying, “In regards to inside basketball, the coach pushes us to be better each day. He thinks about the little things that many people might skip over and makes sure we can have the integrity, grit, and discipline come game time to play our best basketball while still having fun. Outside of basketball, he wants us to use the skills we learned on the court and apply them to our future lives.”

Coach Kronemeyer not only strives to make his athletes better, he strives to have a good relationship with them, as if they were his family and close friends.

Senior Reily Vanderhulst says, “I think the coach wants us to be good basketball players but also good people outside of basketball. He cares for us as if we’re family, and loves when we succeed and is there for us when we lose as well and makes sure that we improve the things we need to in order to win given the next opportunity. He pushes us hard while finding a good balance to have that chemistry and connection to connect with the team as if we’re family.”

Thank you, Nick Kronemyer.  Your passion for the game and belief in each one of your players impacts much more than who your athletes are on the court, but also who they grow to be outside of the game of basketball. You have inspired your teams to push to their limits and strive for excellence. We are grateful for the countless hours you have invested in the growth and success of the program, and we appreciate your positive impact on everyone.
