Hamilton High School’s Groundbreaking First Year of Girls Wrestling
By: Antonia Verduzco
This year, Hamilton High School has proudly introduced its first-ever girls wrestling team. Wrestling, a traditionally male-dominated sport, has experienced rapid growth for girls across the United States, and Hamilton’s addition of a girls team is evidence of that rise. With a group of dedicated and passionate young athletes, this new season has been filled with challenges, triumphs, and most importantly, an unwavering sense of empowerment. The beginning of the girls wrestling team at Hamilton High School is a progressive development not just for the school but for the community as a whole. Wrestling has long been regarded as a grueling sport that requires mental toughness, physical endurance, and self-discipline. For many years, female athletes in the area did not have the opportunity to compete in high school wrestling programs. However, as the sport continues to grow across the country, more and more schools are opening their doors to female wrestlers.
In the first year of the program, the girls wrestling team has already demonstrated growth potential. With athletes like Anastasia Ruggles, Korrayah Kapenga, Alyssa Volkers, and Ally Pelon, the team has shown that there is an undeniable passion for wrestling among young women at Hamilton High School. The underclassmen have already shown interest in joining the team, and many are excited about the future of girls wrestling at the school.
“We already have a few girls coming up from the middle school who have committed to participating next year and more high school girls have since expressed interest in doing so as well. I think Hamilton may have a complete girl’s wrestling team in the next few years.”
Ally Pelon a senior wrestler shares the belief with many of the other women that girls wrestling will continue to progress.
Wrestling focuses on personal accountability and mental toughness. It’s a sport that demands athletes push their limits both physically and mentally. This individual aspect is what sets wrestling apart from other sports, and it has proven to be an empowering experience for many female athletes.
“You have to want it, if you want to go anywhere with it,”
Korra Kapenga, a sophomore tells me that it is clear that the girls who participate have acknowledged the importance of enjoying the sport alongside the personal development that comes with it.
The road to establishing a girls wrestling program at Hamilton has not been without its challenges. It has been a journey of growth and unity. Ally Pelon has shared with me,
“This has been a very unique opportunity, and I’ve made many new friends through this program.”
Originally Ally didn’t share the interest of joining until speaking with Ana Ruggles a junior and Alyssa Volkers a sophomore who both influenced her to watch a practice that helped set her mind that her final year at Hamilton High School she’ll give girls wrestling a try to prove how far hard work and determination can get you.
As the first season comes to a close, the significance of the girls wrestling team’s establishment cannot be overstated. It marks not only the beginning of a new era for the sport at Hamilton High School but also a step toward equality and empowerment for female athletes everywhere. What started as a new opportunity has already begun to inspire future generations of girls to get involved in the sport, challenge stereotypes, and push themselves to be their best. The Hamilton High School girls wrestling program is just beginning, but its future shows more growth and more women developing strong bonds with their limits and challenges during the sport. Hamilton will continue to play an important role in the evolution of girls’ wrestling.
