What are your thoughts on being on varsity? Is it different playing with older players compared to younger players? What is the impact of being on varsity skill-wise? These are some of the questions I had for the three sophomores on the varsity football team. Tyler Michielsen, Michael Klomparens, and Brooks Hawkins. Tyler talked about how he wasn’t supposed to be on varsity, but one of the players got injured so they decided to pull him up to replace the spot. Tyler’s overall reaction was that he was nervous since he was playing a position that he hadn’t played in years. As time came he got more comfortable with the team and the position. Micheal and Brooks talked about how excited they got when they found out and told their family about the great news. The second question was, What was it like playing with Freshman teammates last year and Junior and Senior teammates this year? The boys talked about how the difference between Freshman and Varsity games was that when you play at the Varsity level you get the spotlight, the student section, and tons of people watching, and the pace of the game is a lot different. People are bigger, stronger, and faster. The last question I had for the three boys was, how did playing on varsity impact your skill level, and do they think they would have been better playing on JV? All three of the boys talked about how drastically better they got playing on varsity. If they played on JV they would have used their strength to get through the opponents and wouldn’t use the right form, and technique that they learned on varsity. It also helped them for the future in football, having one more year of experience playing on varsity. Overall the three sophomore football players, Tyler Michielsen, Michael Klomparens, and Brooks Hawkins, were excited to make varsity football and learn new techniques and strategies and how to use their strengths against the competition. They enjoyed their season and can’t wait for their future in Hamilton Football!
