New Season. New Standard. – Donavyn Wagoner

The gym felt different after the win over Godwin Heights. Instead of silence hanging in the air, there was energy that wouldnt fade. Players stayed on the court longer than usual, nit with their hands down, but smiling, shaking hands, and soaking it in. The student section didnt rush out. They stuck around, cheering and celebrating the big win. From opening tip to the final buzzer, the Hamilton Hawkeyes were in control.

Right away Hamilton set the tone. The ball moved with purpose, shots fell early, and the defence suffocated every possession. “We came in knowing we had to hit first,” one player said after the game. “We didnt want it to be close. We wanted to set the tone from the start.” Thats exactly what they did. On offence, the team played unselfishly, making the etra pass and attacking the paint. On defence, they were loud and locked it. “Our communication was the best its been all season,” another player said. “We were talking through every screen, every switch. Thats Hamilton basketball.”

Unlike games in the padt where momentum shifted late, this time Hamilton never let this happen. Every time Godwin Heights tried to make a run, the Hawkeyes responded. A big three. A steal at half court. A tough defensive stop. “We knew they were going to try to come back,” a senior leader said. “But we stayed composed. No panic. We trusted eachother.”

The confidence showed. Rebounding was aggressive, ball pressure stayed high, and the bench brought constant energy. “We were up the whole game, but nobody got comfortable,” one player said. “That’s the difference. We kept our foot on the gas.”

The crowd fed off that intensity. The student section was loud from start to finish, and the momentum never dipped. “It was fun to watch because you could tell we were locked in,” a fan said. “They looked confident the entire game.”

After the final buzzer, the message was clear — this wasn’t luck. It was growth. “This is what we’re capable of when we play together,” one Hawkeye said. “When we defend, rebound, and trust each other, we’re tough to beat.”

The win over Godwin Heights wasnt just another mark in the standings. It was proof of what the Hamilton Hawkeyes can be. Confident. Connected. Relentless. And if this game was any indication, theyre only getting started.
