Inside The Bag Of A High School Swimmer & Diver

A swimmer or diver’s bag is more than just a place to toss gear; it’s a routine. Inside are the essentials that help athletes train hard, compete confidently, and bounce back during a demanding season. Goggles, caps, tech suits, towels, slides, extra snacks  each item serves a specific purpose. When it’s time to step onto the blocks or climb the ladder to the board, having everything in place brings a sense of control and focus.

For the Hamilton boys swim and dive team, being prepared is part of the culture. Before each meet, athletes run through a mental checklist: suit, goggles, cap, water bottle. Even something small left behind can throw off a routine or create unnecessary stress. That’s why most swimmers and divers develop habits around packing  the same way, every time.

For Zach Bain, the one item he always makes sure to pack is “ My massage gun.” “It helps loosen up my arms really well while they are tight after warm up or right before a race,” he said. Whether it’s something that boosts performance or simply helps him stay comfortable, it’ become a part of his meet-day setup.

Another teammate,Tyler Babler, pointed to snacks or headphones as the most important thing in his bag. “I pack snacks in between races and having music helps me lock in.” he explained. In a sport where even down to a millisecond counts and mental focus is key, having that one reliable item can provide an extra layer of confidence.

Although each athlete’s bag looks a little different, the purpose remains the same: preparation. The gear inside reflects personal routines, and discipline built over months of early mornings and long practices. Ultimately, success in the pool or on the board doesn’t just come from talent, it comes from being ready before the first whistle ever blows.
