Competitive Cheer is often misunderstood as a sport, especially in High School. Many people believe that cheerleading is just a sideline activity, but Competitive Cheer involves strict rules, structured routines, and a detailed scoring system. At a High School level, cheerleading is a demanding sport that combines athletic abilities, teamwork, and performing under pressure.
The competition is usually divided into three rounds, each focusing on different skills such as jumps, tumbling, stunting, synchronization, and overall execution.
Teams are assessed based on both the complexity of their routines and the quality of their execution. Minor errors can influence a team’s overall score, highlighting the importance of precision in the sport.
Guidelines are essential in managing the operation of competitions. They dictate the skills that can be used, the timing of routines, and the measures to ensure safety. These guidelines contribute to a level playing field while also guarding athletes’ safety. As a result, cheerleaders need to train regularly to achieve both performance and safety requirements.
Many people do not realize how physically demanding Competitive Cheerleading actually is. Different parts of cheer require different types of strength, endurance, and focus. “I would say that the most physical skill is tumbling because there is a lot of running and arm strength involved”, said the freshman Lilly Jacobs. However, Lilly mentioned that stunting is the most exhausting part of practice. “You have to lift people into the air and use muscles you normally don’t use, which makes it really tiring.”
Sophomore Addyson Beidler shared a similar experience but focused more on the technical side of cheerleading. “The most physical skill is stunting because it takes so much out of you,” she said. “You are using so many different muscles at the same time, and it is very technical.” She also added that repeating routines can be extremely draining. “Doing rounds over and over again to make them perfect is the most exhausting part of practice. It is very demanding.”
According to the team’s coach, the hard work cheerleaders put in does not go unnoticed. “I am really proud of how committed these athletes are,” she said. “They work hard every day, support each other, and continue to improve as a team.”
Competitive cheerleading proves every season that it is far more than just cheering from the sidelines. It is a challenging sport that requires strength, discipline, teamwork, and dedication.
