Heart and Hustle: The Balanced Life of Softball Standout Maleena Luckadoo
By: Rena Bowerman
When the pressure is high and the crowd is loud, Maleena Luckadoo doesn’t crack- she focuses. A steady presence on the field and grounded spirit of it, this Hamilton High School junior has built her softball journey not on flash or fanfare, but on quiet resilience, a deep love for the game, and a drive always to do right for her team.
Her teammates see that, too. “Maleena is an excellent role model, said fellow teammate Audrey Mast. “She’s very kind to others, and she’s always compassionate about the things she does.”
At first glance, Luckadoo may not stand out in the hallways, but step onto the field with her, and you’ll see what makes her special. She’s the glue of the team, a player who lifts others with calm energy and consistent hustle.
She said she has never thought about quitting the game. Her biggest motivation has been performing well for her teammates.
Maleena credits her mom as her biggest supporter throughout her softball journey. Whether in practices or games, that support has stayed consistent.
Outside of sports, Maleena has some hidden talents- she plays guitar and loves to read. Not all her teammates know that side of her.
Being in softball has not always been easy, but Maleena makes it work by getting her schoolwork done early, especially on days without games. Helping her avoid the stress and stay focused.
During big moments, she stays calm by reminding herself, “Whatever happens, happens,” she says.
Being considered by her teammates as more of a calm, level-headed teammate than a loud, hype type has allowed her to stay grounded during high-pressure games.
One lesson softball has taught Maleena is that her sport does not define her. “ Even if you perform badly, you are still the same person you were before you played that game.”
Maleena says playing softball has helped her grow more confident, both on and off the field. That confidence shows in how she carries herself every day.
To younger athletes, her advice is simple: “Have fun. Don’t lose the fun in the sport just because you feel so much pressure.”
Maleena has a unique pregame ritual- if it is a home game, she always drives with her teammate Julia Brown. When asked, Julia said, “ Me and Maleena ride over in her car before every game, and before games, she makes sure that we’re focused and locked in before we get there and mentally prepare.” Showing how even some of the small things help you remember to still have fun.
Coach Mark Behnke shares a story that still sticks with him: “ We were tied 2-2 in the top of the seventh, and she hadn’t hit a home run all year- not even in practice. Then she slammed one over centerfield at Berrian Springs. I’ll never forget it. Even Wayland’s hall of fame coach, who’s got like 1,100 wins, just looked over at me and said, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I told him ‘Nope.”
At the end of the day, Maleena Luckadoo is focused, grounded, and quietly driven. Whether she is on the field or with her friends, she brings calm energy and love for the game.
