In Hamilton with their steady splash under calm skies, the Hamilton Varsity Boys Swim and Dive Team breaks through the silence in Hamilton, Michigan. In the midst of these athletes’ physical and mental challenges that define the life of competitive swimmers, the scent of chlorine lingers in the air.

For most swimmers, it’s hard to stay hydrated and eat enough so they can stay the same weight so they can still compete at the level they desire but for Carson McIntire, his voice is steady but his eyes betray the intensity of his training says. “Staying hydrated, eating right, and getting enough sleep are my ways of getting prepared for upcoming meets.” McIntire’s dedication to his body’s needs is obvious, each word reflecting the tedious care he takes to ensure peak performance.

Jack Langeland, another very good swimmer, embraces a different kind of routine. “Cold baths and staying alone,” he states simply. The cold is not just a sensation but a challenge to overcome. “You have to set everything else aside, and focus on the goal ahead. It’s tough, but it’s worth it.” The cold water that he speaks of is not just a physical sensation but a metaphor for the sacrifices made—time with friends, and moments of leisure, all set aside for the greater goal.

Senior Jackson Miller, a good diver and a very important part of Hamilton’s Diving team his routine to prepare for a meet is to “eat enough and get a good night’s rest” is what he said when we interviewed him Jackson emphasizes the importance of focus and dedication in order to achieve success. He believes that with the right attitude and determination, anything is possible.

While some swimmers and divers go through very big challenges and obstacles, these athletes know their way around the pool and know how to prepare themselves and be their best on meetdays.
