Replacing nearly an entire team is never easy. The Hamilton Hawkeyes learned that lesson firsthand this season. Despite falling short in districts, the team’s growth and resilience showed that a new standard is taking shape
From the first practice to the final buzzer in districts, this team had to grow up quickly. With new starters stepping into bigger roles and younger players adjusting to varsity speed, every game became a lesson. Early mistakes became experience, and experience slowly became confidence and growth.
“We had to learn how to trust each other,” junior Colin Schippa said. “At the beginning of the season, we were still figuring out our roles. By the end, everyone knew where they needed to be.”
A key moment in this season came during their matchup against Spring Lake. In a game that tested their composure, the Hawkeyes executed down the stretch and came away with a hard-fought 49-47 victory.
“That was the game where everything started clicking,” Hudson Hulst said. “We stayed calm, we played together, and we finished.”
Adversity built this team. Close losses, tough road games, and the pressure of postseason play forced the Hawkeyes to respond. Instead of folding, they adjusted. Setbacks became motivation, and by the end of the season, their toughness and composure looked far different from the opening games.
“Those tough losses made us better,” Coach Kronemeyer said. “The guys could have gotten discouraged, but they kept showing up ready to work.”
The growth from this season was not always visible in the win column, but it was clear in the way the team carried itself. Confidence replaced hesitation. Communication replaced confusion. The progress may have taken time and wasn’t always reflected in a win, but it was undeniable by the end of the year.
Junior Carter Hickok reflected on their loss to South Haven. “This season showed us what we’re capable of, and that’s something we can build on when we’re in this position next year.”
Although the season ended with a district loss, it didn’t end without purpose. A new group of guys gained experience and built trust in the process. With almost a full team of returners, the Hawkeyes are no longer starting from scratch. They are building from a foundation that was tested, challenged, and strengthened all year long.
