Inside the Wrestling Bag: Essentials Every Wrestler Carries

Inside the Wrestling Bag: Essentials Every Wrestler Carries.

Every wrestler’s bag tells a story. Packed inside are the tools that help athletes prepare, compete, and recover through the long grind of the season. From wrestling shoes and headgear to tape, deodorant, and an extra change of clothes, each item has a purpose. It’s more than just equipment — it’s what helps wrestlers feel ready the moment they

step onto the mat.

For the Hamilton varsity boys wrestling team, preparation is everything. Before practice or a big dual, wrestlers double-check their bags to make sure nothing is missing. Forgetting even one small item can make a difference in comfort, focus, or safety. That’s why certain essentials become non-negotiable for each athlete.

When asked about the most important thing in his bag, Jeremy Raab didn’t hesitate: nail clippers. While it may seem like a small detail, trimmed nails are critical in wrestling. Keeping nails short helps prevent accidental scratches and keeps both wrestlers safe during close contact. For Jeremy, it’s a simple but necessary part of being responsible and match-ready at all times.

Weston Geerlings, on the other hand, said his knee pads are his must-have item. Wrestling is a physically demanding sport that puts constant pressure on the body, especially the knees. Whether he’s shooting for a takedown or defending on the mat, Weston relies on his knee pads for protection and added confidence. They allow him to wrestle aggressively without worrying about unnecessary strain or impact.

While every wrestler’s bag may look a little different, the goal is the same: to be prepared. The items inside reflect habits, discipline, and attention to detail — all qualities that define successful wrestlers. In the end, it’s not just about what’s in the bag, but how those essentials help athletes perform at their best when it matters most.
