Making Her Mark: Kelsey Mersman’s Journey

Whether she’s launching home runs over the fence or freezing batters from the mound, junior Kelsey Mersman has emerged as a key player for Hamilton’s softball program. Her ability to perform on both sides of the game fuels the team’s success and sets the tone for the leadership and work ethic that define the Hawkeyes this season.

When asked what one word describes Kelsey as a person or player, without hesitation, the overwhelming answer amongst her teammates was, “competitive.”

Now in her third year on varsity, junior Kelsey Mersman has significantly made her presence felt as a two-way threat. She made noise last season after pitching a no-hitter against the team’s rival, Holland Christian, a performance that still stands out in program history.

Mersman has shown time and time again that she belongs. Now in her junior season, she has evolved into a true two-way threat, leading the Hawkeyes with an ERA of 3.26 and an 11-3 win-loss record. Offensively, she’s just as dangerous, batting .396 while consistently producing in pivotal circumstances.

This wasn’t always the case for Kelsey, though. When her time began on varsity, she wasn’t the headline on the scouting report, but she was taking the right steps to become the player she is today.

Hamilton Varsity coach Mark Behnke stated, “Now she’s pretty much at the forefront of what the people talk about. But with that added responsibility, she’s handled that ascension very well, she’s become one of the better infielders in our league and that’s because of her hard work.”

Her all-around contributions have helped boost Hamilton to a competitive

OK Black conference, and with one year still left, her contributions are far from done.

Softball wasn’t always a shoo-in for Kelsey; at a young age, she didn’t even give softball a second look.

She began playing recreational softball, and a coach suggested she play for the “all-star” team. This is when she said she truly fell in love with the sport.

When Kelsey was asked, “What does being able to play for Hamilton mean to you?” Her response shows exactly what she brings to the table.

Kelsey responded by saying, “Playing for Hamilton has been an honor, and I’m very fortunate to play alongside my teammates who also have put in so much hard work, and being in a winning program is so rewarding after putting in so much work. The work came before me and will continue after my time here.”

Inspiration and motivation can carry a person to accomplish great things and become someone they’ve always wanted to be.

Kelsey’s Inspiration comes from her old travel ball coach, who unfortunately passed away from cancer.

Kelsey said, “He was my biggest inspiration because he always pushed me to do my best and believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.”

Challenges are a major part of sports, and when asked, “What has been the biggest challenge?”, Kelsey responded by saying, “My biggest challenge was when I broke my foot and ankle in 8th grade, and I knew I had to come back even stronger.”

For many high school athletes, it is a dream for them to continue their athletic career into college and this was the case of Kelsey.

She said, “It’s always been a dream of mine to play in college.”

Kelsey’s dream recently became a reality after her commitment to play softball at the next level at GRCC.

While she still has one more year left in her time at Hamilton, her efforts are far from done. With districts soon approaching, the one thing on her mind is winning.

“Winning means a lot to me. I am very competitive especially when it comes to softball because I care so deeply about this sport and the people that play side by side with me.”

It’s safe to say that her presence will be felt going into districts especially when it comes to supporting her team and playing her best softball in the hopes of helping her team win.
