With several new players stepping up to the varsity level this season, the softball team’s dynamics, depth, and strategy are poised for change. This year, four incoming freshmen have been pulled up to join the varsity roster, each bringing not only a unique personality but also distinct skill sets that could significantly influence the team’s performance.

Lexi Mersman has quickly emerged as a standout player.  She plays travel softball for the Michigan Mavericks and plays at both first and third base, third base being her favorite. Her skill on the field exceeds her age, being able to make plays you wouldn’t typically see from a freshman.

Head coach Mark Behnke has considered her experience and described her as the “anchor at third base.” She is becoming an encouraging leader on the field, and everyone is looking forward to seeing what she is capable of.

Sarah Brink is making an exciting return to softball this year after a 3-year break. She plays as a right fielder and she works hard every day to learn new things. She is reaching milestones quicker than expected, getting her first hit in a winning game against Holland.

Her coaches are extremely proud of her improvement this season and credit her great demeanor, quiet confidence, and ability to ask questions. Her skills and softball knowledge grow every day, and she has become a great asset to the team.

Kendall Cornell is making a positive impact on the team from left field, and as the team’s backup catcher, she learns a lot from starting catcher Taylor Oosterink. Kendall has been playing softball since second grade and is on the Diamonds travel softball team.

Coach Behnke is very pleased with her performance this season.

“A lot of pop in her bat and hits with power,” Coach Behnke claimed.  Coaches anticipate that she will have a solid finish to the season with continued growth and knowledge.

Last but certainly not least, Bella Goetsch. After rehabbing an injury, she has made a return to the field. Playing as a pitcher for Lake Effect travel softball, she has grown her softball IQ and has been and will be an overall excellent athlete.

Her coaches expect her to be a phenomenal softball player by the time her career is over at Hamilton High School.

Coach Behnke says, “Bella’s actions carry a lot of weight, even for a freshman.” He anticipates great things from her now and is excited about the future.

Lexi, Sarah, Kendall, and Bella are projected to continue thriving on the varsity team this season and in the years to come. Their experience competing at the varsity level will help them grow as athletes and people. Coaches, teammates, and fans are excited to witness the contributions these players will make to the team and the softball program as a whole.
