All around the state of Michigan, high school girls have been fighting to win the MHSAA basketball championship. Though many teams have different strategies and approaches to achieve this goal, they all need one thing to win: superior leadership.
The Hamilton High School girls basketball team has been on a fluctuating journey this season, showcasing not just their skills on the court but also the strong leadership that has propelled them to win.
From the season opener against Grand Rapids Catholic, it was evident that this team was different from the others. Their commitment to each other and their shared goal of winning was pronounced, creating a synergy that shifted into impressive performances and hard-fought victories.
At the heart of this success is a leadership structure that emphasizes collaboration, communication, and respect. The senior team captains, Kaitlyn Geurink and Haylie Peterman, have fostered an environment where every player feels valued and motivated.
As teammate Kelsey Mersman put it, “They lead by example and show us not only how to be good basketball players but better human beings overall.” This sentiment highlights their influence both in competition and in shaping the team’s values.

Fellow senior Bella Tamminga echoed this tribute, emphasizing their impact during games: “They both run the court very well when we’re playing.” Their ability to execute plays efficiently has been key in keeping the team confident throughout the season.
Teammate Joselyn Paskavan also praised their leadership, noting, “They are very good role models; they lead by example and are very encouraging.”
Their ability to uplift and inspire their teammates has played a major role in the team’s chemistry and success.

Geurink herself takes her leadership role seriously, making a conscious effort to set the tone for her team. “I try hard to be an example of what we all should be doing and also try to be positive to my teammates when things aren’t going our way,” she said.
Her words reflect the team’s determination to keep pushing forward, even through the tough moments. The ability to stay positive under pressure has been a defining factor in Hamilton’s success this season.
Peterman shares a similar mindset, ensuring that she lifts her teammates up in both games and practices. “I just try to be positive and encouraging on and off the court and reassure the team that we have the ability to win games,” she explained.
Her commitment to the team extends beyond just game days. “Having the responsibility of being a captain affects all the little things I do for the team each day and the amount of commitment I have to the team,” she added.

This level of dedication from the captains has set a high standard for the entire team. Their leadership is not just about calling plays or leading warm-ups; it’s about instilling confidence, resilience, and trust among their teammates.
The Hamilton girls basketball team’s journey this season is a testament to what happens when talent is matched with strong leadership and an unwavering commitment to success. Although the team is currently 5-11, with Geurink and Peterman leading the way, the team continues to rise to every challenge, proving that true leadership goes beyond the scoreboard – it’s about building a culture of excellence that lasts far beyond the season. As the season progresses, one thing is clear: this team is not just playing to win games; they’re building a legacy.
