Hamilton Makes Waves: In a Senior Night Showdown Against No. 1 Holland Christian

By Liam Draper

On senior night, the Hamilton boys’ swim and dive battles top-ranked Holland Christian.

The Hamilton boys’ swim and dive team faced a tough challenge against our biggest rival Holland Christian squad in a highly anticipated rivalry meet. The stakes were high, with Holland Christian sitting at No. 1 in the state, and the Hawkeyes would have to put up a good fight.

This rivalry is an intense matchup between the two teams. What makes it so competitive is that Holland Christian was ranked #1 in the state, and it would have been big if they could have come close to beating them.

The boys ultimately fell to them in a hard-fought contest, despite strong individual efforts from the team. The team was ultimately unable to overcome and beat the powerhouse of Holland Christian. While the loss stings for the team, they remain focused on building and have their eyes set on improving as the end comes.

The importance of the meet made the atmosphere way more electric for the boys. As it was senior night and the last home meet for the seniors, the stakes were high for those who wanted to PR.

Going into the meet, the boys wanted to have positive energy and excitement, knowing they were going against such a great team, they just wanted to show up and compete and have a great time during senior night.

Adding to the intensity of the meet was the emotional weight of Senior Night, the final home competition for Hamilton’s graduating swimmers. The atmosphere was electric as the team sought to make the night memorable.

“Everybody had a lot of positive energy and everybody was excited for it. Senior Night is always a fun meet for us no matter what team we go against.”

While some swimmers achieved PRs and others fell short, Tyler believes the meet served as a stepping stone for future success.

Looking back on the season, Tyler reflected on what he would have done differently.

“If I could go back to the beginning of the season, I would change my mindset. At the beginning of the season, I didn’t think I would be close to a state cut, so I didn’t really have the mentality of working as hard.”

One of his standout moments came at the Spring Lake meet, where he posted 59.9 in the 100 backstroke, an achievement he hadn’t thought was possible for him.

Before the race, Tyler was locked in mentally.

“During school, I was focusing on how my race was going to go, and I was visualizing what my race would be like. On the bus ride there, I took a nap, and then when I got there, I was just very, very focused up until my race. After the race, I was really happy because I had dropped a lot of time, and I got a time that I never thought I would.”

Even though the final score wasn’t in their favor, Hamilton gave everything they had, determined to make their last home meet of the season to remember.
