The passion of Kaitlyn Geurink and Kelsey Mersman has a profound influence on those around them. This is what being a basketball player on the girls’ varsity team is like. They have love, passion, and motivation while still having fun and loving their team and sport.
Being on a team that means so much to you and loving your sport, means genuinely having fun and enjoying the game you are playing. However, at some points, you don’t always see that in a team or just some players. Enjoying time with your teammates is an important part of playing a sport and being a good teammate.
“It’s definitely very special because I love my teammates, I feel like they’re all like my best friends,” says senior Kaitlyn Geurink
Enjoying what you’re doing and being happy with your excellent games and your favorable plays is in important value to Kaitlyn. She loves playing basketball.This helps her strive to play the best she can, but enjoying what you do, appreciating your time with your teammates, and building each other up is just as important to her.
Being in a sport is never easy, there are difficult times and easier times. However, there is always something special about it. Being in a team is like having a family that is not blood, who have love and support you, and help give you the motivation you need in the moment.
What drives the passion of a sport for an athlete? Well for Varsity girls basketball, they have their team, friends, and coaches, they act as a family. You see them laughing, talking, and enjoying their time playing, but they still have their game face and competitive mindset. It’s important to have both of those, as an athlete.
“ I’m passionate about it because it brings me joy to see my teammates succeed,” says junior Kelsey Mersman
Kelsey loves being on the court and playing, it keeps her active throughout the winter. Something she appreciates that comes with basketball is her team. Seeing her team and teammates succeed at what they also love which brings her joy and more love for basketball. Her team is a huge part of her playing basketball and the delight that comes from that.
This is what it means to have passion in a sport over winning a trophy.You have friends, family and you enjoy the time you have playing and participating. You have the motivation to do what you’re doing, all while still winning a trophy. You can kick butt and still have fun and love what you’re doing.
